Formula 3 Euro Series, Race 18, 5 Oct 2008, Le Mans.
After sunshine comes rain – also at Le Mans. Red Bull Junior Robert Wickens (CAN) wins in Formula 3 for the first time. Jean-Karl Vernay (FRA) on the podium as well – P3, Brendon Hartley (NZL) only 16th after a spin, Mika Mäki (FIN) dropped back to P20 after a collision on lap 1.

The Formula 3 Euro Series has been decided – with three races still remaining. The title goes to Germany for the first time, to Nico Hülkenberg, who has dominated this year’s series especially on Saturdays – with five Feature Race wins.

Yesterday’s race went very successfully for the Red Bull Juniors:
Mika Mäki (FIN/Mücke Motorsport) finished on the podium – P3, Jean-Karl Vernay (FRA/Signature-Plus) took fifth, Robert Wickens (CAN/Signature-Plus) clinched P7 ahead of his team mate Brendon Hartley (CAN/Carlin-Motorsport).

Frenchman Mailleux received a thirty second penalty after yesterday’s race – relegating him to P23.

This meant that for the first time this year two Red Bull Juniors made up Sunday’s front row: pole position for Hartley, P2 for Wickens. Four Juniors in the top six!

Three drivers of the Red Bull Junior Team immediately took to the front after the start: Wickens – Vernay – Hartley. Mika Mäki on the other hand collided with yesterday’s winner Jules Bianchi and dropped down to the back of the field.

It started to drizzle after the opening lap – the track got slower, but certainly slippery and dangerous.

Wickens pulled away – followed by Hartley and Vernay, who was attacked by Dani Clos (ESP). Clos eventually went past Vernay on lap four.

The rain grew heavier and heavier until the sixth lap – and race control stopped the race after six laps, for the time being. Incidentally, not all drivers changed to wet weather tyres on the grid – some stayed on slicks, and the rain slowly began to cease.

The race was resumed after twenty minutes – with Wickens/Hartley on the front row and Clos/Vernay on the second.

The new F3 Euro Series champion, Nico Hülkenberg, started tenth, Mika Mäki resumed the race from P22. There were barely six minutes left to run.

Wickens defended his lead – followed by Clos and Vernay, Hartley spun on the first lap after the restart and dropped back to P17.

Wickens controlled the race from the front with the rain setting in once again – and eventually won his first Formula 3 Euro Series race, after having won in the Formula Renault 3.5 World Series.

Vernay finished third behind Clos – his second podium finish this season.
Hartley ended up a disappointed 16th today, a no more cheerful Mäki in P21.

Wickens: “A crazy race with a perfect ending – I had no problems and was always able to control the front. Now I have won in both series – World Series by Renault and now Formula 3, just great!”
